How to talk to a patient about recording and AI analysis?

Asking for a patient’s consent to record therapy sessions and analyze them using artificial intelligence can raise questions or concerns - and that’s completely natural. Patients want to know what happens to their data and whether this approach truly benefits their therapy.

Below are 10 clear and simple arguments you can use during a conversation with your patient. They help explain why session recording (with full anonymity and data protection) can actually support the therapeutic process - for both therapist and patient.

You can use this material as a conversation starter, showing that AI-based analysis isn’t a technical requirement, but a thoughtful choice that can lead to deeper understanding, more effective therapy, and better access to mental health support for others.

My full attention is just for you.

Imagine that during our session, my full attention is completely on you. I don’t need to focus on writing detailed notes or trying to remember key points. I can truly listen, look at you, and be fully present in the moment - making our therapy deeper, more personal, and more effective.

More accurate analysis and better preparation for future sessions.

Thanks to recording and automatic transcription, I can review our conversation in detail after the session. This helps me notice subtle cues, patterns, or key moments I might have otherwise missed. It allows me to understand your challenges more deeply and prepare for our next session, ensuring continuity and the highest quality of care.

Your progress becomes easier to see and track.

Recordings and analyses give us an objective view of the progress you’re making. Sometimes it’s hard to notice changes yourself, but with this tool, we can look back at key moments together and see how your perspective and coping strategies are evolving. I can track your development over time by comparing structured notes from different sessions, leading to more effective therapy.

Full data security and anonymity.

I understand that your privacy is an absolute priority. I want to reassure you that the system is fully secure. Recordings are not stored on servers or in the cloud. The conversation is immediately anonymized - all identifying information (like names, addresses) is removed, so the transcript contains no details that could link it to you. Your identity is fully protected.

The highest standards of data protection and legal compliance.

The level of security is comparable to government or military systems, using end-to-end encryption (AES-256). Data is processed exclusively within the European Union, in compliance with GDPR and the AI Act. This means your data is protected from foreign (e.g. U.S.) jurisdiction over session content.

Your data is never used to train AI models.

Let me be clear: the content of our sessions will never be used to train artificial intelligence. The technology provider is legally bound to this promise. Your data is only used to generate a note from our specific session and is treated as highly sensitive medical information.

Full control over your data and the right to withdraw consent at any time.

Your consent is completely voluntary, and not giving it will not affect the quality of your care in any way. You have full control over your data. At any moment, without giving a reason, you can withdraw your consent for future session recordings, and previous recordings or transcripts can be deleted at your request. You also have the right to access your transcripts, giving you greater transparency and control over your own medical information.

Clear and well-structured clinical documentation.

Emothy generates an ideal, well-organized clinical note, avoiding mistakes caused by manual note-taking. The note is objective, complete, and understandable for other professionals - which is especially helpful if a consultation with a psychiatrist or another specialist is needed in the future. It’s also useful in crisis situations.

Support for therapists in complex cases (supervision).

Sometimes, in particularly complex cases, therapists consult with a more experienced colleague through clinical supervision. An anonymized -completely anonymous - version of our session allows me to gain a valuable, objective perspective from a supervisor, which directly improves the quality of help I can offer you. Your identity remains 100% protected in this process.

Shorter wait times and greater access to therapy.

Thanks to automated notes and less administrative work, I save a significant amount of time that I can dedicate to what matters most - helping my patients. Therapists lose 20–40% of their time to documentation. In practice, this means I can see more people in need, which helps to reduce waitlists and increase access to psychological support for everyone. By giving your consent, you’re indirectly helping to improve access to mental health care in Poland.

Emothly supports mental health specialists by offering innovative tools for transcription, analysis, and generation of clinical notes to improve patient care.
